Make a Splash // Mermaid Wedding Gowns

This year, and into 2024, the mermaid gown is expected to be one of the most sought after wedding dresses for all seasons. And we believe it, as we're already seeing more of them in the weddings we've filmed this year so far!

Many give credit to Jennifer Lopez for this reemergence, as she famously wore a custom Ralph Lauren mermaid gown, her skirt overflowing with ruffles, as she celebrated her marriage to Ben Affleck last August. And designers showcased so many mermaid gowns in various forms in their 2023 and 2024 collections. Yes, the mermaid gown is back!

Most are familiar with this style of dress, even if not by name. The mermaid silhouette is a fit and flare gown that clings closely to the body at the bodice, waistline and thighs, continuing its slim fit until the skirt's fabric reaches the knees. Then, the fabric flares out either at the knee or just below. It's similar to the trumpet silhouette, which instead begins its flare mid-thigh and tends to be a bit more straight rather than contouring.

The design, especially when contoured very tightly to the body, beautifully highlights and enhances the bride's curves on the wedding day. The meticulous tailoring necessary in these fit and flare structured gowns creates such a stunning, sultry hourglass shape. It is most definitely a very sexy look, guaranteed to wow guests every time.

Although they're gorgeous, the knee-hugging design of mermaid gowns do make them a little more difficult in which to walk and dance. And of course, the shapeliness of these dresses make them less forgiving for the bride than other dress silhouettes. However, there are styles that have a slightly looser fit and a more subtle flare to them, perfect for less daring brides. So no matter your body shape and your level of comfort, if a mermaid gown is your dream wedding dress, go for it!

Let's go back into our archives to check out Dana's gorgeous strapless mermaid gown at her Valentine's Day wedding at Tendenza. It was covered in lace, very contoured and had that iconic mermaid shape. And Patrina wore an equally beautiful mermaid silhouetted dress at her Park Savoy Estate wedding. Her gown also had a sweetheart neckline and lots of lovely beading down its elongated bodice.

And one more mermaid gown example... Jamie wore one of these stunning fit and flare dresses at her Glen Foerd wedding event. Another absolutely beautiful bride!
