Today’s wedding cakes are true standouts. While a white multi-tiered cake is still one of the most popular choices for brides and grooms, modern bakeries are catering to more unique interests in cake shapes, sizes, colors and adornments. Check out our past posts on projection mapping, ice cream wedding cakes or even wedding cupcakes for a taste of some of the more interesting and uncommon options. Whatever style you choose, you can’t really go wrong with your wedding cake or dessert choice!
But if you’re looking for some of the hottest, most popular ideas in wedding cakes for this year (and most likely through 2017 as well), these three confectionery concepts are still very much on-trend:
- Rustic – These cakes include “naked” cakes… cakes that do not have an outer layer of frosting. Instead, only a filling or frosting is spread in between the exposed layers. Naked cakes have an simple, organic feel and are wonderful for outdoor and garden weddings. These stripped down cakes are certainly not plain and boring however! They often have dreamy embellishments, such as fresh flower accents, especially wildflowers, or fresh fruit and sometimes a drizzle of chocolate, caramel or preserves.
- Buttercream – This icing has been beating out fondant lately and has never really gone out of style for wedding cakes. Buttercream is a perfect choice for satisfying a large gamut of tastes because it’s not too sweet and not too heavy. Today’s most popular buttercream cake designs have a smooth finish applied.
- Flower accents – Using realistic-looking sugar flowers or real, fresh flowers, often seen cascading down the tiers or a simple arrangement on top of the cake, is the most popular ornamentation on today’s wedding cakes. The most requested flowers are the perennial wedding favorites: roses, peonies and hydrangeas.
