Just last week, Pantone Color Institute released their highly anticipated Color of the Year for 2021 and this year, two received this honor: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. Ultimate Gray is a functional, classic neutral, grounding and solid, while Illuminating is a bright, sunny, cheerful shade of yellow.
So who or what is Pantone, you ask? In the world of creative arts, graphic design, textiles, architecture and countless other industries (including wedding professionals!), Pantone is the acclaimed expert on color. This North American company was responsible for the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a book of standardized color in a fan format that’s widely used in most graphic arts, digital technology, fashion, interior design, paint, plastics, and architectural markets. Pantone Color Institute is a unit within the company that forecasts trends, selects the Color of the Year each year and advises businesses on color choices. Pantone has been inspiring creative design professionals for over 50 years.
Pantone Color Institute says this color combination, “whose ties to insight, innovation and intuition, and respect for wisdom, experience, and intelligence inspires regeneration, pressing us forward toward new ways of thinking and concepts.” The two shades seek to inspire us to look to the year ahead with optimism and hope, with gray providing the strength and resilience needed to move forward and yellow offering positivity and happiness. Ultimate Gray and Illumination together are meant to soothe and uplift the human spirit.
Pantone’s decision on its Color of the Year is never entirely based only on what’s going on in the larger world around us, but rather also looks specifically to trends emerging within the arts and fashion industries. However, the company admitted that there was no escaping the influence of the pandemic this past year. And Ultimate Gray combined with the vibrant, Illuminating, represent feelings of fortitude, reliability and vitality needed now more than ever.
